HCC PD K-9 ranks ‘top dog’ in competition

His job is to sniff out suspicious activity at Houston Community College campuses, but Tyler’s talents go beyond keeping students and staff safe.

The first K-9 crime fighter at the HCC Police Department now has another accomplishment under his collar.

Tyler, a 2 year-old German Shepherd, placed second in the K9’s 4 Cops, Harris County Sheriff’s Office K9 Officer Olympics at the HCSO training facility in Humble recently.

Tyler faced off with canine comrades from around the country in general patrol tactics such as catching suspects, vehicle and building searches.

“Whenever you do this kind of work, you have to be really smart,” said Officer Landon Davis, Tyler’s handler. “Not every dog can do this.”

The top dog joined HCC PD earlier this year through K9s 4 Cops, a non-profit organization that helps law-enforcement agencies get canine patrol dogs on school campuses.

Davis and his four-legged partner spent four months training and getting to know each other before they hit the streets together.

“We train hard and we strive to be the best K9 team we can be,” Davis said.

HCC is the first and only college in the Houston area to get a dog from K9s 4 Cops. For more information about the HCC Police Department go to www.hccs.edu/police.
