HISD Superintendent to serve as keynote speaker for HCC Online Black History Scholarship Gala on Feb. 24

Houston Community College’s Black History Scholarship Gala takes place 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, February 24 as  an online fundraiser in partnership with ABC13 Houston/KTRK-TV. 

The theme is Black History is Everyone’s History. Millard House II, superintendent of the Houston Independent School District, will serve as the keynote speaker.

ABC13’s Melanie Lawson, a longtime HCC Black History Scholarship Gala partner and supporter, will emcee.

Since 2006, under the auspices of the HCC Foundation, the gala has raised tens of thousands of dollars to provide scholarships to deserving HCC students. Last year, the BHC held its first online scholarship gala after 16 years of in-person gatherings featuring some of the most-celebrated African-American actors, performers and speakers in the nation. The virtual event appeared on KPRC’s click2Houston.com raised more than $50,000 for scholarships.

“We anticipate a strong showing even in these challenging times,” says Donnell Cooper, co-chair of the HCC Black History Committee. “Houston has shown its willingness to open its heart and wallet to help students who really need help for higher education and are definitely grateful to receive it.”

“The partnership engagement that we have with Channel 13 is a spectacular achievement that benefits everyone,” says Fheryl Prestage, co-chair of the HCC Black History Committee. “We thank them for their support. It’s going to be a great night.”
