Houston Community College has been selected to participate in the Department of Labor, American Apprenticeship Initiative (AAI) evaluation and implementation study taking place later this year. HCC was the only college in Texas to be awarded the AAI grant and was selected for the study based on exemplary progress toward meeting the AAI goals.

“The American Apprenticeship Initiative Grant provided an avenue for Houston Community College to create apprenticeship programs in Information Technology and Pharmacy Technician. I have seen students transform their lives from being unemployed and/or displaced but with a commitment and opportunity they are now thriving in their career with stability for them and their families,” said AAI Program Director, Janell Hills.

The $4.2 million grant funds registered apprenticeship and pre-apprenticeship programs in the emerging Healthcare and IT industries, as well as upgrades an existing program in plumbing occupations. The program is currently serving 620 workers in the Houston Gulf Coast and Greater Dallas Regions. CVS Health, and JPMorgan Chase are among the project’s partners.

The first round of site visits are expected to last up to three days and to occur in June 2019.
