HCC Foundation receives historic donation from Consulate of Mexico in Houston

Nov 20, 2015

Houston Community College students will get more help achieving the dream of an education in the United States thanks to a generous gift from the Consulate of Mexico in Houston. The $63,000 donation is the largest ever given from the Mexican Consulate to an educational institution.

“It’s an honor to receive this kind of investment from the Consulate of Mexico in Houston,” said Dr. Cesar Maldonado, HCC chancellor. “This is the beginning of a great partnership which will create more opportunities for students at HCC.”

Funds from the Mexican Consulate Scholarship provide support for tuition, books and fees for Mexican students who live in Houston, students who are of Mexican origin, or low-income, undergraduate students during the 2015/2016 academic year. HCC educates more international students than any community college in the country.

“Getting this scholarship is a wonderful opportunity,” said Jessica Olivares, scholarship recipient. “It is nice to know that there are people willing to help you with your education.“

“It is our goal to invest the most we can in education,” said Oscar Rodriguez Cabrera, Cónsul General of Mexico in Houston. “For the Mexican Government, this is a great opportunity to support and collaborate with HCC to offer access to higher education for minorities.”

At the November meeting of the HCC Board of Trustees, Cónsul General Oscar Rodriguez Cabrera presented a $63,000 check to Chancellor Maldonado and Shawn Taylor, president of the HCC Foundation Board.

“This investment will make a tremendous difference,” said Taylor. “We really appreciate the Consulate of Mexico in Houston making HCC an institution of choice.”

“It has been a pleasure to work with the Consulate of Mexico in Houston and his team to secure these scholarship dollars for our students,” said Carme Williams, HCC Foundation executive director. “$63,000 will make a great impact in advancing students’ educational opportunities.”
