The House of Representatives of the 88th Texas Legislature recently honored Houston Community College (HCC) Chancellor Cesar Maldonado, Ph.D., P.E., for his work leading the college system over the past nine years.

Dr. Maldonado “fostered an inclusive, supportive culture for students and staff while boosting academic achievement through innovative programs,” stated a resolution introduced by Rep. Mary Ann Perez, who represents District 144 in the Texas House of Representatives.

Earlier this week, legislators passed the resolution acknowledging Dr. Maldonado’s leadership that increased the number of graduates at HCC by more than 12 percent per year.

During Maldonado’s tenure, HCC forged partnerships with local industries to open pathways for students to enter the workforce after obtaining their associate degree or certificates, said Rep. Perez, who formerly served on the HCC Board of Trustees before being elected to the legislature.

The resolution cited some of the chancellor’s other notable achievements, including leading HCC through challenges such as Hurricane Harvey and the COVID-19 pandemic.

The resolution also noted that HCC has twice earned the distinction of being designated an Achieving the Dream Leader College, signaling its commitment to educational access and quality under the leadership of Dr. Maldonado.

“I want to thank Rep. Perez and the entire Legislature for the wonderful support they have provided to HCC and me personally,” Dr. Maldonado said later. “I am truly honored by this recognition. The Texas Legislature’s commitment to providing Texans with educational opportunities through community colleges has made and is making an enormous difference for our state and communities.”

Chancellor Maldonado, who holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in chemical engineering from Texas A&M University and a doctorate in systems and engineering management from Texas Tech University, will conclude his tenure at HCC in August.
