Newsletter from Trustee Dr. Cynthia Lenton-Gary, District VII

Aug 9, 2022

Greetings Neighbors,

For two and a half years I have represented you on the Houston Community College Board of Trustees. As your Board Chair, I am working with the Chancellor, administration, and my colleagues to ensure student success and community engagement. The need for higher education and career advancement continues to grow, and HCC continues to provide courses and programs to stimulate educational advancement for our students. We are striving to increase enrollment in our dual credit and early college programs which offer participants the opportunity to graduate high school with a diploma and HCC with an associate degree simultaneously.

Options to Help You Succeed

In response to the effects the pandemic placed on education, HCC offers more online and hybrid courses than ever before. We also provide several options for obtaining computers and internet access. Our goal is to keep students engaged and moving forward towards the completion of their studies and the start of new careers.

Expanded workforce training, community learning classes for personal development and lifelong learning for those over 55 years of age is critically important in my community. HCC has dozens of workforce programs that help students jump start their careers, no matter their age. Classes are offered for both credit and noncredit. Our Level 1 Certificates help students improve their job status with a credential after a single semester. If you are looking for outstanding options close to home, check out HCC’s acclaimed Culinary Arts program at HCC Central and our health sciences programs at several locations in the area.In addition, many HCC students need financial aid to help with the cost of their education. HCC’s advisors and financial aid team can direct you to financial aid and scholarships. I encourage you: Do not let a lack of funds stop you from pursuing your personal aspirations through higher education. Call HCC and let us help!

HCC is Leading the Way!

HCC collaborates with community and industry partners to help create advanced programs and training for our students. Because of the collaboration with an industry partner, HCC was able to celebrate the Grand Opening of the HCC Security Operations Center, known as SOC. This center will be instrumental in educating and training students to fill many of the 70,000-job openings in cybersecurity.

HCC is leading the way to design a bold vision for our students’ future. We are working to evolve our institution and empower our students to succeed inside and outside the classroom. Make HCC the home for your educational needs and career advancement.

Sincerely,

Dr. Cynthia Lenton-Gary Signature
