HCC's Dr. Chandra Mittal named fellow in coveted Medical Biotechnology program

Scientific Bioprocessing, Inc. and BioMADE have announced that HCC's Dr. Chandra Mittal, program coordinator for the Medical Biotechnology program, has been selected for the highly-competitive Fellowship Program.
The program's goal is to develop a sustainable and modernized capacity for educational institutions to engage in industry-guided practices in the development of skills knowledge and competencies related to upstream and downstream bioprocessing.
Equipment for biomass monitoring and bioprocessing technology are significantly limited in many education and workforce readiness programs for training bioscience technicians. The program aims to accelerate and enable instruction and workforce readiness through providing access to laboratory equipment and leveraging the expertise in curriculum design within Career Technical Education programs.
As many as 23 community and technical colleges will receive state-of-the-art bioprocessing equipment through the SBI Digitally Simplified Bioprocessing Fellowship. The equipment – valued at an estimated $368,000 – will bring real-time solutions to biomass monitoring and bioprocessing technology training resources to community colleges nationwide.
Fellowship participants will use the equipment in their classrooms and have the opportunity to collaborate with other fellows on applications and curriculum over the course of the two-year initiative.
“I am honored to be part of the Fellowship," Mittal said. "The program will help train and prepare students to fill much-needed roles right here in Houston. Our Medical Biotechnology program at Coleman College is brand new, and our students will now be utilizing and learning with state-of-the-art equipment. Students will learn industrial bioprocessing techniques applicable to bio-manufacturing of diagnostic and therapeutic products for various infectious and metabolic diseases like Covid-19, cancer and diabetes."
Mittal earned his Ph.D. in Biochemical Pharmacology at All-India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, and completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Virginia. He is an elected Fellow of American College of Clinical Pharmacology, and an established medical scientist with more than 50 years of experience and expertise in biochemistry, pharmacology and medical biotechnology.
He was part of a team that conducted pioneering research work on the discovery of Nitric Oxide and NO-Cyclic GMP signaling system in mammalian organs. This discovery was awarded the 1998 Nobel Prize in Medicine. Dr. Mittal has served on the expert panels of National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation and American Heart Association.
