May 22, 2023

The Houston Community College (HCC) Board of Trustees has launched a search for an Interim Chancellor to serve while an extensive national Chancellor search is conducted.

Current Chancellor Cesar Maldonado, Ph.D, P.E., will leave HCC by Aug. 31 after guiding one of the nation’s largest community colleges for nine years.

In a statement to HCC employees released May 19, Board Chair Cynthia Lenton-Gary, Ph.D., said, “The Board and I are committed to keeping you engaged and informed as we advance this two-stage hiring process. This summer we will finalize the process for the permanent chancellor search, which will include multiple opportunities for input from internal and external constituencies. We look forward to your participation. Together we will ensure that Houston Community College continues to be the source of opportunity and hope for our dynamic community!”

The search for an Interim Chancellor is being conducted with guidance from the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) Searches. Details about the position can be found on the ACCT website at acctsearches.org and the HCC website at hccs.edu/about-hcc/board-of-trustees.

Deadline for applications is Sunday, June 4, in anticipation of an Interim Chancellor in place by Sept. 1.

According to the Position Profile, the Board seeks “a proven executive leader—committed to the community college mission—to sustain the College’s momentum of institutional success and provide unifying leadership beginning summer 2023 as the Board undertakes a comprehensive search for a permanent Chancellor, to be selected in spring 2024. The Interim Chancellor may apply to be considered for the permanent position.”
