The pain of losing her youngest son, Chase Simon, to gun violence on a Third Ward street four years ago hasn’t eased at all for HCC English professor Syble Davis. But this year, like the last three, Davis is again putting her sorrow into action. She is continuing the Drive-By Toy Drive she and her family began in 2019 to honor her son, and to help bring joy and happiness to deserving children in the Third Ward area.

Music filled the air at the 2022 F2F Music Summer Camp, which drew 21 Houston-area students to the HCC Stafford Fine Arts building for an immersive musical experience. Now in its third year, the summer camp was the result of a partnership this year between Houston Community College Southwest and the F2F Music Foundation, a nonprofit educational performing arts group founded by jazz recording artist Vel Lewis.

About 40 Empowerment High School students have taken flight as Houston Community College Eagles with the start of their new, dual-credit journey. To kick off the first cohort of 39 freshmen and sophomores in the high school’s Early College Academy, students took part in an Academic Signing Day on Sept. 2 where they committed to earning associate of arts degrees from HCC while also getting their high school diplomas.

HCC Chancellor Cesar Maldonado, Ph.D., P.E., met with 39 key leaders from business, industry and economic development at HCC’s West Houston Institute recently to launch a new collaboration focused on addressing the region’s long-term workforce training needs. The meeting was the first of the newly formed Chancellor’s Business Champions Council (CBCC) and represented some of the largest employers in the Houston metropolitan area.

Former Lamar Institute of Technology President/CEO, Lonnie L. Howard – a 1995 graduate of Houston Community College – was recently bestowed the honor of having the institute’s technology center bear his name. The renaming of the Dr. Lonnie L. Howard Technology Center was at the direction of the Texas State University System Chancellor and Board of Regents in recognition of Howard’s contributions as president of the Beaumont, Texas institute for six years before he stepped-down in August.

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo has donated $25,000 to support HCC’s Public Safety program and students. The donation was made before the HCC Board of Trustees at a meeting on May 19, 2022. Since 2017, the longtime area organization has awarded $200,000 to the HCC Public Safety Center of Excellence and an additional $20,000 in private scholarships to HCC students.

The HCC Katy campus Emergency Medical Services (EMS) program has moved from Katy to its new home at the HCC Spring Branch campus, just in time for the 2022 summer sessions. Students will now be able to take basic Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) courses and Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) Paramedic 1 coursework at the Spring Branch campus, located at 1010 Sam Houston Parkway.

A manufacturing industry organization has donated $40,000 to Houston Community College to help students to succeed in skilled trade careers. The PVF Roundtable donation this month brings the organization’s total charitable contributions to the college to $150,000 since 2017 to fund scholarships for students to pursue jobs in manufacturing such as a welder, manual machinist, CNC machinist and industrial mechanic.

Earning an HCC diesel maintenance and repair certificate is a challenge that requires mechanical knowledge and the ability to master technologies used in the much-in-demand field. HCC student Leon Hosea is working hard to achieve that goal. But mastering the curriculum and showing his skills aren’t the only hurdles he must clear. Hosea lost his vision in 2014, which meant suspending his career as an aviation mechanic.

After two years of academic grind, Denzel Wilson is counting the days to a milestone in his quest for a tech career. In May, he will walk the stage for a degree in artificial intelligence. Wilson, 25, will be among the initial AI graduates from Houston Community College, the first community college in Texas to launch an AI Associate of Applied Science degree program in summer 2020.
