Houston Community College has received a Houston Business Journal 2021 Outstanding Diversity Helping Hand Award for the college’s work promoting and advancing diversity and inclusion.

At a ceremony held today, the Journal noted the college’s dedication to promoting and championing diversity through providing diversity-related resources, including job sites, diversity training programs and e-learning.

“We are honored to be among the leading organizations recognized with this award,” Chancellor Cesar Maldonado. Ph.D., P.E., told the gathering. “We know that the rich diversity reflected in our region – and in our faculty, staff and students – is our greatest strength.”

The college system Maldonado leads is celebrating 50 years of service in 2021. It is the leading community college in the U.S. in conferring associate degrees to minorities and in educating international students. Maldonado has led the college system since 2014, focusing on student success that has led to an increase in graduates of more than 12 percent annually.

“We strive to empower our students’ success, no matter their gender, age, race, sexual orientation or religion,” Maldonado added. “This wonderful award recognizes the hard work and efforts of our faculty and staff to enrich lives through education in the communities we serve.”
