HCC Foundation accepts donations for students impacted by pandemic

Apr 14, 2020

The HCC Foundation (HCCF) is raising funds to provide emergency relief to Houston Community College (HCC) students who are struggling with unexpected expenses as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Support ranges from helping students meet urgent basic needs (such as food, housing, and utilities) to covering the cost of internet access and/or devices so students can continue their studies via remote learning.

Every dollar received in donations from the community will be matched up to $50,000 by a matching grant from the HCC Foundation.

HCC students come from the lowest-income households compared to students from any college in the Houston region. The need for urgent help for HCC students impacted by the pandemic is significant.

As of April 13, a total of 1,756 students have been awarded more than $714,000 in emergency aid relief. HCC Financial Aid is currently processing another 800-plus applications and the number of students requesting support increases daily. The emergency student fund will be critical to aid these economically vulnerable students and will need to be replenished in the coming weeks and months.

The impact of these funds is immediate and transformative. One grateful student recipient of emergency funds wrote, “This money has been the biggest blessing to me because with everything going on, I haven’t been able to buy another laptop since mine was stolen. This is my last semester before graduating and without this money, I don’t know how I would have completed these classes.”

“Our Foundation Board and staff are committed to raising funds for student success at HCC – and the need is even greater during a crisis such as COVID-19,” said David Regenbaum, chairman of the HCC Foundation Board of Directors. “Every single day we work to find ways to assist and provide the necessary funds for HCC students. We hope that Houstonians can join us in supporting our students during this unprecedented time.”
