Dear neighbors,

The start of a new year is always exciting! It is a time to look forward, but also an opportunity to look back at the accomplishments of the last 12 months. At Houston Community College there is much to celebrate.

For the second time since 2011, the U.S. Department of Education has selected HCC’s Challenge Early College High School at the West Loop Campus as a National Blue Ribbon School. The award recognizes public and private schools based on their overall academic excellence or their progress in closing achievement gaps among student groups. Challenge Early College High School has 465 students. About 85 percent of them earn Associate of Arts degrees under the program.

The academics at West Loop Campus are first rate, but it is also quickly becoming a hub of innovation where students are learning the skills needed to land jobs at the more than 1,000 computer-related companies in Houston. For example, the HCC Center for Digital and Information Technology recently unveiled a custom-designed arcade console which digital gaming students will use to showcase their latest inventions. West Loop Campus students also built Poppy the robot, HCC’s first humanoid robot.

It’s a little known secret that HCC offers the most affordable tuition of any higher education institution in the region. With more than 100 programs in academics, business, cyber security, machining, culinary and performing arts, health sciences and more, HCC has what you need to obtain an associate degree, prerequisites for transfer to a four-year university or workforce training.

We are the #1 community college in the nation for international enrollment and #1 for awarding associate degrees to minorities. It’s not too late to register for the spring semester. Come join the millions of students who have already made the Smart Decision to improve their lives through education and training at HCC. We can’t wait to see you!
