Homelessness and HCC students to be the focus of special panel discussion February 21

Feb 12, 2019

Faculty, staff and students from all HCC campuses are invited to attend a panel discussion on student homelessness 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Thursday, February 21, in Room 101 of HCC Central's Learning Hub Science Bldg., 1300 Holman St., in Houston's Midtown area.

The Politics Of... Homelessness and HCC Students: Awareness, Solutions, Resources is designed to increase understanding of the needs of homeless students at our campuses, and work on ways to help students facing housing insecurities succeed in college. The event is sponsored by the HCC Black History Committee and the Department of Student Life at Central.

The discussion will include the showing of the documentary Invisible, an 18-minute film about homelessness among students at HCC. The documentary was directed by Justice Butler, an HCC NW film student and advocate for student homelessness.

Moderated by Central Student Life Coordinator Karl Mayes, the workshop will cover specific ways HCC faculty and staff can lessen the plight of homeless students at the college. Attendees will also discuss ways to improve the registration process for homeless students in the college. Local social service agencies also will be on hand to share information about the resources they offer.

The panel discussion is free and open to the public. For more information, please call Central Communications at 713.718.6226.
