HCC and Midtown Houston host Holiday Tree Lighting Celebration November 20

Nov 20, 2019

Houston Community College (HCC) Central and Midtown Houston are welcoming the holiday season with a 20-foot holiday tree lighting celebration on Wednesday, November 20 at 6:00 p.m. The event will take place on Memorial Green, the front lawn of HCC Central located at 1300 Holman St.

The holiday tree lighting marks the first time the college and Midtown Houston are co-sponsoring a free community wide event. The non-denominational activity - created by HCC Central's Student Life department - is open to all.

"We are pleased to collaborate with HCC on an event that shows the spirit of the holidays and uplifts the community in a fun and festive way," says Cynthia Alvarado, Operations Manager of Midtown Management District. "The event will help both groups strengthen its efforts to encourage cultural tourism to the area."

As the largest landowner in Midtown, HCC has a long history of involvement with the district. The college also has the largest number of international students of any community college in the nation.

"We invite all cultures, HCC students, families and Midtown residents to this holiday celebration," says Karl Mayes, HCC Central's Student Life Coordinator. "This event is designed to unify people and show the beauty of the season from many perspectives."

The celebration will feature holiday music from the HCC Central Choir. Representatives from HCC and Midtown Houston will provide brief remarks, all leading up to a countdown to the tree lighting by Swoop, HCC's mascot, at about 6:45 p.m.

Free parking for the event is available in any HCC Central parking lot.
