HCC Public Safety students benefit from funds raised by Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo

Feb 14, 2018

As trail riders head into Houston and cowboys get ready to kick off the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, future first responders, training at the Houston Community College Public Safety Center of Excellence, are benefiting from the HLSR’s annual fundraising efforts. Known for scholarships granted to students who traditionally attend four-year universities, the HLSR also supports the training of community college students.

Amidst the parade crowds, rodeos and all-star performances, there are countless public safety officials on hand to keep events safe. Chances are many of them have trained at HCC. Realizing the impact that HCC has on first responder training, the HLSR has developed a longstanding relationship with the college.  Generous donations provided by the HLSR have helped HCC to provide a high level of training, and also deliver highly skilled first responders into the Houston workforce. Since 2009, the HCC Public Safety COE received more than $550,000 in donations for equipment and scholarships.

“We are deeply grateful for Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo’s longstanding commitment to HCC and what their investment makes possible for our students who are preparing to be the city’s next generation of first responders,” said HCC Foundation Executive Director Karen L. Schmidt.

The donations have helped the Public Safety program to purchase much needed high-tech equipment and supplies, including adult, pediatric and female birthing mannequins, cardiac monitors and simulation units. As a result of the HLSR donations, students also have access to a stationary ambulance training unit, high technology simulation labs and a mock 911 dispatch center. In addition to equipment, public safety students are able to apply for scholarship dollars provided by the HLSR to cover the cost of tuition, books and supplies.

“We truly appreciate the HLSR and know that our students may end up serving as first responders for the thousands of spectators who attend the rodeo,” said Director of Public Safety Johnny Sessums.

The HCC Public Safety COE offers certificates and degrees in fire sciences, emergency medical services and law enforcement, as well as professional development opportunities for agencies.

The Public Safety COE is located at the Northeast Campus, 555 Community College Drive, Houston, TX 77013. For more information on public safety training programs, visit hccs.edu/public-safety
