Veterans Academy awarded College Credit for Heroes Phase VI Grant

Aug 16, 2017

The HCC Veterans Academy in partnership with members of the HCC Health Sciences Center of Excellence was recently awarded a $446,000 Texas Workforce Commission, College Credit for Heroes (CCFH), Phase VI grant to expand the Veterans Academy program for veterans and service members. HCC was awarded a CCFH Phase V grant in 2016 and this phase aims to capitalize on prior military experiences, translating skills, training and experiences into academic credit and gainful employment opportunities. The Veterans Academy – Health Sciences Accelerated Delivery Program (ADP) will partner with the Medical Education and Training Campus (METC) located on Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas to develop crosswalks designed to assist veterans with obtaining certification in the areas of Emergency Medical Services – Paramedic Certificate Level II, Licensed Vocation Nurse, Dental Assisting, Medical Assistant, and Pharmacy Technician. These crosswalks will utilize Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) technology to award credit for military education and experience toward civilian credentials and create streamline pathways to a degree. Dr. Tanya Ingram, Program Director for the Veterans Academy, said "This amazing partnership between HCC and METC would not be possible without the Texas Workforce Commission. Our goal is to increase opportunity and access to education, employment and improve the overall quality of life for our most deserving citizens, our Veterans and their families.” The grant period is scheduled to begin in January 2018 and will run until June 2019.
