Spring 2017 Newsletter from Trustee Adriana Tamez

Jun 8, 2017

Dear Neighbors,

As immediate past Board Chair, I want to thank my colleagues, the Houston Community College (HCC) administration, staff and faculty, as well as my constituents for your support. It has been an honor to serve you and lead the HCC Board of Trustees.

Communication was my focus as Board Chair. And there was so much about HCC to share – from student accomplishments to the College’s long-term strategic plan. It was my priority to keep everyone in our community informed about the many ways HCC is committed to serving its community.

Using our theme, “We are Houston’s Community College,” we positioned the college as the college of choice for area students, families and businesses. We used the media and local partners to help disseminate our message and drive awareness and understanding of HCC, its work, its accomplishments and its importance to Houston.

We also leveraged our partnership with the Houston Texans to reinforce the college’s alliance with one of the strongest brands in our city. Our outdoor boards reinforce to the community that, “Together, HCC and the Houston Texans are building Houston’s workforce.” We are also proud of our partnerships with the Rockets and the Dynamo, as well as all our other industry partners.

As your trustee, it’s my honor and privilege to ensure HCC is a good steward of the resources entrusted to them. I serve because I believe HCC is one of the most valuable educational and workforce development resources in the Greater Houston region.

As Houston’s Community College, we want to ensure your investment and your trust is multiplied. I’m pleased to report HCC is providing an excellent return on our community’s investments. We are making sound financial decisions that have a profound impact on the communities we serve.

A recent national assessment calculated that HCC generates a total economic impact of $4.1 billion in total added income for the regional economy. And, last year, HCC alumni added 38,801 jobs to the region with an annual income of $3.6 billion. This economic boost is similar to hosting the Super Bowl 15 times.

In addition to the return on financial investment, HCC has been instrumental in propelling a multitude of students to personal and professional triumph. And through HCC’s transformation process, these numbers will grow in the years to come.

These exceptional students need your help to thrive and obtain their goals. In the 2015-2016 school year, 1,085 of our students received $1,251,644 in scholarships from the HCC Foundation. For many students, these scholarships are the only reason they could afford a college education.

The HCC Foundation plays a critical role in providing pathways to success for our students. It provides numerous opportunities for giving, and I welcome your personal and corporate involvement.

Today, I invite you to help the Foundation achieve its ambitious goal of funding $3 million in scholarships and awards by the year 2020. The numbers show an investment in a scholarship for an HCC student is fiscally sound. Thank you for your continued support. Together, we ARE Houston’s Community College.

In service,

Dr. Adriana Tamez
