Kurt Ewen portraitHouston Community College (HCC) today announced that Dr. Kurt E. Ewen has been named to the new position of Vice Chancellor for Planning and Institutional Effectiveness. Ewen comes to HCC from Valencia College in Orlando, Fla., where he served in several faculty and administrative positions.

Dr. Cesar Maldonado, HCC Chancellor, said Ewen’s wide experience and educational background make him a perfect fit for the college.

“Kurt possesses innovative leadership skills essential to supporting our transformation plans at HCC,” Maldonado said. “Kurt’s background as both an administrator and professor give him the leadership tools necessary to support our strategic planning process.”

Ewen was a professor of philosophy at Valencia College from 2001-2006. He has served in many administrative posts, including Vice President for Institutional Effectiveness and Planning and, most recently, as a Presidential Fellow.

In his new position as HCC, Ewen will oversee and coordinate planning and strategy that promotes innovation and enhances student success. “I can’t tell you how excited I am for the opportunity to help move HCC forward through creativity and innovation,” Ewen said. “Houston is a great city and HCC is one of the most outstanding community colleges in the nation.”

Ewen earned his Ph.D in Leadership and Education at Barry University in Miami. He received his Masters of Arts in Religious Studies at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Leuven, Belgium and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy at St. Meinrad in Indiana.

“We welcome Kurt to Texas,” Maldonado said. “I know he will hit the ground running as HCC continues to pursue its mission of creating the ultimate student experience.”
