Evans-Shabazz named HCC Board of Trustees Vice Chair

Dr. Carolyn Evans-ShabazzAt its August 17 meeting, the Houston Community College (HCC) Board of Trustees elected Dr. Carolyn Evans-Shabazz as the new vice chair of the board for the remainder of 2017.

“Dr. Evans-Shabazz has a strong commitment to student success.” Said Dr. Cesar Maldonado, HCC Chancellor. “Her role as vice chair positions her well to share her leadership experience in student development and to advocate for and support programs that enhance the student experience at HCC.”

Elected to the HCC Board of Trustees in November 2015, after an appointment in May 2015, her focus as trustee for District IV has been to address workforce training and development, to increase scholarships for students, and to increase access for women, veterans, minorities and small business owners.

“Dr. Evans-Shabazz brings to the table a vital level of experience, talent and passion for the work we do in service to the communities we represent,” said HCC Board of Trustees Chair Eva Loredo. “I am proud to have her by my side as we work to make Houston Community College a leader in higher education.”

Dr. Evans-Shabazz graduated from Spelman College with a degree in political science, and she earned both her master’s degree in psychology and her Doctorate in Education (counselor education) from Texas Southern University. Currently a real estate professional trained at HCC, she has been a teacher and lead evaluation specialist with the Houston ISD, an educational diagnostician with both Aldine ISD and Fort Bend ISD, and an adjunct professor at Texas Southern University. 

A native Houstonian, she comes from an impressive line of educators and believes education is the centerpiece of the American Dream. She is the secretary of NAACP-Houston branch where she serves on the executive committee and is chair of the education committee.

Dr. Evans-Shabazz will serve as a member of the Board Executive Committee with Board Chair Loredo and Secretary, Trustee Neeta Sane.
