Spring 2016 Newsletter from Trustee Carolyn Evans-Shabazz

Apr 29, 2016

Dr. Carolyn Evans-ShabazzDear Neighbors,

It has been my distinct pleasure to represent you as Trustee for District IV. I am amazed each day to see what is going on at Houston Community College and thrilled to be member of the HCC Board of Trustees. The destination is only as good as the pathway, and the pathway that HCC is offering is affordable and supports student success.

The HCC Health Sciences Center of Excellence at the Coleman College for Health Sciences is a one-of-its-kind facility in the world-renowned Texas Medical Center. Students have access to programs in over 20 of the fastest growing careers in medicine and opportunities abound as the HCC presence in the Med Center is getting even bigger with Phase II construction underway.

You may have heard about the recent challenge facing the Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program at Coleman College. Please be assured that HCC has made changes to the curriculum and class structure, and offers students extra support as they continue their journey to become registered nurses. Their success is our goal.

We continue to make great progress at HCC Coleman College and across the district.

I firmly believe that we will have to take the college to the community in order to change the lives and circumstances of our residents.

HCC is a proud participant in “Turnaround Houston”, the City of Houston’s new initiative to make sure Houstonians have the skill set to take on job opportunities. The program offers access to job training, resume writing, and counseling services to help residents who want to turn their lives around. HCC looks forward to meeting and working with those in our community who are looking to obtain 21st Century job and workforce skills. I encourage you to attend the City of Houston job fair from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m., Monday, May 9 at the George R. Brown Convention Center.

The community realizes the jewel that they have in Houston Community College. As a board member, I will continue to spread the word about the many opportunities HCC provides to support the economics and the workforce of this city and beyond.

I thank you for your support of HCC and for the role you play on a daily basis to make our institution Houston’s Community College.

In service,

Carolyn Evans-Shabazz, Ed.D.
Secretary
HCC Board of Trustees
District IV
