HCC partners to help students in MATHSTARS competition

May 18, 2016

The sum of math plus students plus Houston Community College (HCC) equals a fun-filled day of vying for the top honors in the annual MATHSTARS competition held at STAR Learning in Katy.

HCC is proud to be one of 18 institutions partnering with STAR Learning to highlight students excelling in this STEM-related subject.

The competition gives second to eighth graders, as well as teachers in the Fort Bend and Houston areas, a chance to test their math knowledge. About 150 students studied for weeks and came prepared to face off against others in their math skill level, from beginner to advanced. The winners in each skill level received certificates, trophies and cash prizes.

Students not only take away beneficial test-taking skills; but they also discover new friendships through math and friendly competition.

Next year, STAR Learning plans to expand the competition to include the Greater Houston area and hope to accept 400 students to compete in the MATHSTARS contest.
