San Jacinto Memorial Green Grand Opening

Saturday, December 3, marked a significant milestone for students, faculty and administrators who have made Houston Community College (HCC) Central Campus a second home. HCC administrators and other dignitaries officially dedicated the front lawn at one of the most historic and influential educational buildings in Houston – the former San Jacinto High School.

“Having the front lawn of the San Jacinto Memorial Building completed has long been a dream of mine,” said Dr. William W. Harmon, President of HCC Central. “I’ve always wanted to see it as a beautiful green space instead of a parking lot. This is what we have now."

The event celebrated the final stage of construction around the San Jacinto Memorial Building. It also started a major fundraising effort by the San Jacinto High School Alumni Association and the Houston Community College Foundation. The funds generated through sponsorship opportunities will be used to provide student scholarships.

“We have contacted many former students of San Jacinto High School and some significant donors have already sponsored several of the Memorial Green’s features,” said Alan Finger, CEO of the San Jacinto H.S. Alumni Association.

“This is a formal way to let everyone know what we have here and to get on board.”
