HCC offers training to enter insurance industry

Jun 1, 2016

In light of recent natural disasters, insurance agents are playing an important role in guiding victims through the recovery process.  When a crisis strikes, insurance agents are called upon to assist with the claims process, policy selection, and enrollment.

The Houston Community College (HCC) Business Center of Excellence is now offering an opportunity for students to enter into the insurance industry through a Level 1 Insurance Certificate, with less than one year of training. There are many opportunities in the industry to work as an independent agent or for national companies. The program prepares students for employment as an agent selling and assisting with policies that cover automobiles, health, life and property. Upon successful completion of the program, students take the state licensure examination.

“This insurance certificate opens the door to abundant opportunities in the industry and allows students to build a rewarding career that can increase their economic status,” says Dr. Jesus R. Rodriguez, dean, HCC Business Center of Excellence.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Handbook, the 2015 median salary for insurance agents is $48,200 with a projected employment growth of 9 percent through year 2020. With the recent increase in access to health insurance due to federal healthcare reform, employment growth is projected to remain strong for agents selling health and long-term care insurance for many years to come.

Insurance Specialist Certificate classes are offered at the HCC Northline Campus, 8001 Fulton, 77022. To learn more about the program, call 713.718.2991 or visit hccs.edu/business.
