HCC to dedicate Madeleine McDermott Hamm book collection

Sep 3, 2015

The Houston Community College Interior Design program will dedicate the collection of more than 1,000 interior design books belonging to legendary Houston home furnishings editor and antiques dealer Madeleine McDermott Hamm, Thursday, 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., October 8 in the Fine Arts Center, 3517 Austin at Holman Street.

Hamm, the longtime Home Design editor for the Houston Chronicle, collected books covering many key aspects of interior design - from the stately confines of historical and famous landmarks to profiles of the world's top designers. It is a one-of-a-kind collection of materials to which few college interior design programs can claim.

“We are thrilled to be the beneficiaries of such a remarkable collection of books on interior design,” said Shasta Swift, associate chair of Consumer Arts & Sciences.  “Ms. Hamm has an outstanding collection that is valuable and literally spans decades. It is a wonderful resource that our students can draw upon for their interior-design studies at HCC.”

The dedication also will serve as an "open house" for the award-winning Interior Design program at HCC, which is showcasing its new, larger location on the third floor of the Fine Arts Center at Central Campus.

“Designers, industry professionals, future students, and the community are invited to explore the program and what it has to offer,” said Professor Kevin Hamby, RID, ASID, program chair for Interior Design. “Houston has a vibrant community of professionals who know and respect the caliber of students we produce. No one needs to learn the intricacies and elements of good interior design by going anywhere else. We offer it here.”

The outstanding design work of the program's gifted interior design students also will be on display at the dedication.
