HCC breaks ground on Eastside Campus Student Life and Workforce Building

A thunderstorm forced Houston Community College officials to hold an unusual groundbreaking inside the learning hub of the Eastside Campus of HCC Southeast for the new Student Life and Workforce Building. Despite the bad weather, the event brought out almost 100 people including community leaders, students and HCC trustees.
The $26.5 million project includes a workforce building that will house courses such as welding, machining, HVAC, industrial automation/electrical labs, and general classrooms. The Student Life facility will include student life support services, tutoring, study areas and student lounge areas.
“The workforce and student life facilities are perfect timing for where we are today in our economy,” said Dr. Cesar Maldonado, HCC chancellor. “We want to meet the needs of our students as we are growing here and provide an environment that welcomes them in. ”
Arturo Velazquez is a Biomedical Engineering student who is excited about seeing the construction of more buildings on the Eastside Campus.
“They mean new opportunities for us,” said Velazquez. “They mean new futures and new challenges.”
Maria Jaramillo is studying business management at Southeast College and hopes to graduate in Fall 2015.
“For me this means new opportunities for students,” said Jaramillo. “It means success for HCC.”
HCC’s Groundbreaker Bond Program is a capital improvement program involving 14 projects across all six colleges, adding state-of the-art instructional buildings, parking garages and significant updates to existing buildings as well as new technologies to meet student needs, especially in high-demand areas such as health sciences, as well as science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education.
“We are very excited about what’s to come,” said Dr. Adriana Tamez, HCC Board of Trustees Secretary, District III. “What we continue to do in the next few years is critical.”
