Batter up … HCC starts coed softball team

Nov 5, 2015

On a field with four bases, three strikes and two teams, one goal was a uniting factor – building relationships. The Houston Community College Coed Softball team took the field hoping for a win, but scored more than just points on the board.

This softball team was organized with the aim to win games and network. Many companies invest time or money in creating a softball teams. In this league, the majority of the teams feature rosters comprised of Houston area business employees, giving HCC students a great opportunity to get their feet in the door while playing on the field.

“Softball seems to be the sport that most companies go for as far as getting people together and networking,” HCC Recreational Sports Specialist Shannon Baylor said. “So it was a natural choice.”

This re-established softball team of eight men and three women has two returning players and continues to welcome more members.

“There are a lot more people coming out this time than before,” HCC Petroleum Engineering student Martin Cerritos said. “People actually want to come out and play and hopefully get better together”

The team has seen an increase in numbers, but is always looking for more players to contribute. Women, in particular, are in high demand for the softball league.

“One thing I would tell them is that if they know any women players that would like to play, definitely come out.” Baylor said. “Two, just know that we are a family. In the past there have been people that come out to help entertain kids while the mothers play.”

The softball season is five weeks long with a one-week of postseason. They team meets every Wednesday to play in a doubleheader.
