Houston Community College Board of Trustees authorized a conditional 6th and 9th Grade Pre-Admission Program in August. This new program provides the opportunity for students in the HCC service area to go to college and apply for financial assistance if they meet provisional requirements for admission at the time of enrollment.

The HCC Scholar Success Program is the first step in planning for college and the future. Families of Houston-area 6th and 9th grade students will be notified of the program. Students will be asked to sign the “Scholar Pledge.” The pledge states that the student will stay in school and graduate from a Texas accredited high school, participate in the HCC Scholar Success Program that will help them plan, prepare and pay for college success, achieve a cumulative high school grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale, that they will not use illegal drugs or commit a crime or delinquent act and they will apply for HCC admission and financial aid on time as a high school senior.

As part of the HCC Scholar Success Program, students will be assisted with improving their reading, writing, and math skills. They will engage in career exploration activities, and learn about college services and programs, including how to pay for college. Students will also learn about strategies and techniques for effective study and learning.
