Students who need financial support to obtain their college education were the toast of the 2014 Houston Community College Hispanic Scholarship Council Luncheon.

The event, spearheaded by HCC Trustees Eva Loredo, Dr. Adriana Tamez and Zeph Capo, was attended by nearly 330 guests focused on educational opportunities for the Hispanic community.

Generous donors raised nearly $70,000, proceeds of which will go to the HCC Hispanic Scholarship Council Scholarship, which provides financial assistance to Hispanic students who are enrolled for a minimum of nine hours at any of the six colleges in the Houston Community College District.

Gina Herrera, a Nuclear Medicine Technology student at Coleman College, was one of eight students awarded the scholarship this year. She shared her story about going through tough personal and financial times.

“This scholarship has helped me to not give up on my dreams,” said the wife and mother of three. “It was the push I needed to keep going.”

Other scholarship recipients are Mariana Martinez Ugarte, a Communications and Media Arts major; Lorena Valdiva, Business major; Jeffrey Novaez, Communications and Media Arts major; Andrea Hernandez, Business major; Mark Rodriguez, Engineering and Technology major; Kevin Duran, Math and Natural Science major; and Arturo Velazquez, Engineering and Technology major.

Dr. Edgar Colón, a prominent Houston lawyer, visiting professor at the University of Houston and member of the Houston Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, was given special recognition during the event. He received a community service award for his dedication to the Hispanic community and to education.

“We want to thank all of the sponsors, the trustees and the students of Houston Community College. It has been a great honor,” said Dr. Colón.

“Edgar is a great friend of HCC and he’s very involved in education,” said Eva Loredo, trustee. “He’s always a great mentor to all of our students.”
