Magna Carta February 14, 2014 - August 17, 2014
An original edition of the “Magna Carta,” and the only known example of the King’s Writ — a letter from King John to the Sheriff of Gloucester announcing the signing of the Magna Carta — is visiting Houston from its home in Hereford Cathedral.
The Magna Carta is considered to be Great Britain's most valuable export to the world and is a model upon which the United States Constitution was based. The Magna Carta continues to serve as the definitive document modeling basic civil liberties, and is the source of many of the most fundamental concepts of law. In more than 100 decisions, the United States Supreme Court has traced dependence on the Magna Carta for an understanding of due process, trial by jury, the importance of a speedy and unbiased trial, and protection against excessive bail or fines or cruel and unusual punishment.

Bulgari: 130 Years of Masterpieces (Now showing)
Presenting 150 show-stopping pieces inspired by Greco-Roman classicism, the Italian Renaissance, and the 19th-century Roman school of goldsmiths, along with sketches and other materials from the Bulgari archives, Bulgari: 130 Years of Masterpieces showcases Bulgari’s innovations in jewelry design and includes several striking pieces from the Elizabeth Taylor collection.
Gemstone Carvings: The Masterworks of Harold Van Pelt (Now permanent)
For more than 35 years, Harold Van Pelt has quietly been perfecting the art of carving quartz, rock crystal and agate gemstones. The stone is worked down until it is paper-thin which gives it the transparency of glass. These are incredibly delicate works of art you need to see to believe.
Permanent Exhibits:
Hall of Ancient Egypt
The themes of writing, religion, natural resources and mummification will be explored in this new permanent exhibition hall. The hall will present artifacts collected during early days of investigation and compare old-style archaeology to 21st-century approaches. You will find the Museum’s own mummy, Ankh Hap, in the new hall.
Alfred C. Glassell, Jr. Hall
The exhibit includes over 40 specimens of game fish representing over a dozen species found off the coast of Cabo Blanco, Peru. Media interactives and labels also complement the hall.
Other permanent exhibits include the Morian Hall of Paleontology, Cullen Hall of Gems & Minerals, the Weiss Energy Hall, Lester and Sue Smith Gem Vault, John P. McGovern Hall of The Americas and more, including the Wortham Imax Theater, the Burke Baker Planetarium and Cockrell Butterfly Center.
